Job Description
The Team
The Data for AI & Analytics team owns and curates SEEK’s behavioural data at scale — the very data that powers our most important AI models and drives analytics across SEEK. We build high-quality data assets that are foundational to how SEEK understands and improves experiences for both individuals and organisations.
This position will report to the Engineering Manager and be part of a team made up of senior and mid-level data engineers. This role collaborates closely with internal peers, including staff, senior, and mid-level data engineers; analytics engineers; and data solution designers. The team works in close partnership with several Analytics teams across SEEK, and a key part of this role involves enabling those teams to work more productively with AI.
About the role
The Staff Data Engineer is a senior technical leader within the Data for AI & Analytics team, responsible for building high-quality data assets that sit at the foundation of SEEK’s AI and analytics ecosystem — including the behavioural data that fuels our most critical AI models and informs strategic decisions across SEEK.
As an in-team technical specialist, you design and build fit-for-purpose solutions while strengthening the team’s technical systems and platforms. You lead and elevate technical practices that enable effective software delivery, demonstrating deep expertise in the team’s codebase, systems, and tools. You also drive alignment between your team’s technical roadmap and SEEK’s broader technology strategy.
Responsibilities
- Design, build and operate scalable, high‑performing data systems.
- Ensure systems are well‑architected, secure, and meet SEEK’s technical and platform health metrics.
- Lead and embed strong engineering and DevOps practices to continuously improve delivery and reliability.
- Act as the technical escalation point, owning production issues through to resolution.
- Champion clean, well‑tested, secure code and uplift technical capability within the team.
- Collaborate effectively with Architecture, Security, and other technical stakeholders to align solutions.
- Partner with Analytics teams across SEEK to identify and implement opportunities that help them work faster and smarter with AI tools and modern data practices.
- Champion AI adoption within the Data Engineering team — identifying practical ways to improve how the team designs, builds, and operates data systems using emerging tools and workflows.
- Drive clear communication and alignment between technical work, team priorities, and customer outcomes.
Qualifications
Skills and experience
- Deep expertise in the Spark framework (Batch and Structured Streaming).
- Proven experience building and operating large‑scale, cloud‑based data platforms and warehouses.
- Strong proficiency with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Advanced software engineering, coding, scripting, and SQL/database skills.
- Skilled in logical and physical data modelling.
- Hands‑on experience with DevOps practices — deployments, infrastructure, monitoring, and operations.
- Demonstrated leadership in tech‑leading, mentoring, and developing engineers to enhance delivery performance.
- A genuine interest in applying AI tools and evolving engineering practices to improve team productivity and delivery quality.
