Technical Manager Grid Services

Job Description

Company Description

Statkraft is Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy from hydro, wind and solar power. We have around 6,500 employees in 20 countries. We have been making clean energy possible for over 130 years, with unrivalled expertise in supplying the world with what it needs most. We envision a world that runs entirely on renewable energy

We are seeking an experienced Technical Manager to lead technical performance of grid services projects across our UK and Ireland portfolio. Working across typically synchronous compensators and battery storage, you will play a pivotal role in enabling the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy system.

This role is ideally suited to a strong senior electrical engineer with strong multi-disciplinary knowledge, proven experience in transmission and distribution and the ability to balance commercial, operational and regulatory constraints in a rapidly growing renewable energy environment.

Job Description

The job is accountable for design, delivery, and technical performance of the grid services projects (Typically these currently entail synchronous compensators and battery storage plants).

In support of this accountability, the job incorporates:

  • Technical decision making through all stages described in the Statkraft Develop & Construct ((D&C) project price within the The Statkraft Way (TSW).
  • Selection of equipment ratings based on plant and grid characteristics, Grid Code requirements, and applicable statutes, regulations, and international standards
  • Single line diagrams and general arrangements of grid connections in support of applications, including switchgear and plant layouts, cable routes, site access, etc.
  • Liaison with civil, protection, telecommunication, metering and control engineering colleagues
  • Substation cost estimation including maintenance of database of cost components
  • Generating technical specifications and evaluating technical compliance of submissions from contractors and bidders
  • Short-circuit current calculations review/approval
  • Contractor design document review/approval
  • Quality surveillance and test witnessing in supplier factories and on-site

Qualifications

The job requires multi-skilled, pragmatic engineering knowledge, with an ability to manage own workload and provide ad hoc support to colleagues who may be over-loaded.

  • Engineering and construction experience in electricity transmission and distribution experience
  • Work experience in substation engineering for either network owners or consultants.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Structured thinker with good analysis and synthesis skills, and rigorous record-keeping.
  • Organisational interaction ability in both face-to-face and remote-working situations.

Specific academic and professional qualifications required are:

  • University degree in engineering
  • Registerable or registered as CEng or international equivalent.

Additional qualifications that will be an advantage are:

  • National Grid TP141 certification
  • Masters degree or Doctorate in engineering

For practical reasons, the job also requires:

  • Driver’s licence and willingness to travel to sites in UK and/or Ireland.
  • Computer literacy with demonstrable capability to use full Microsoft Office suit.

The job requires innovation and problem-solving to address the potentially contradictory requirements from the Project Business Case, Grid Code, Net Zero imperatives and Sustainability considerations.

  • Assessing proposed engineering solutions to operational performance, safety and environmental issues identified in risk assessment discussions.
  • Technical optimisation and value engineering of projects in development phase, taking strategic commercial considerations into account.
  • Constructability and maintainability assessments, including participating in replanning to address issues while holding delivery dates as far as possible.
  • Facilitating resolution during construction of inevitable inter-contractor misalignments at critical interfaces.
