Senior Coatings & Corrosion Consultant

💰 $104k-$144k

Job Description

Structural Integrity Associates (SIA) is seeking a Senior Coatings & Corrosion Consultant to help build and grow our coatings and linings service offerings within the nuclear power industry. This position may be based remotely or in one of our office locations.

This role combines technical execution, client engagement, and business development. The selected candidate will support existing coating-related work while playing a key role in expanding SIA’s presence in areas such as internal linings, protective coatings, and corrosion mitigation strategies for critical plant assets.

This is a high-visibility, growth-oriented role with the opportunity to shape a developing service line and directly influence its long-term success. The position will also support research and development (R&D) programs, field applications, and technical consulting for clients.

The work environment within SIA is highly collaborative, leveraging expertise across Structural Integrity (e.g., Materials, Chemistry, Vibration, Advanced Reactors) to deliver solutions that enhance component reliability, extend service life, and improve safety.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support coating and linings projects for nuclear plant systems involving coating selection, qualification, performance assessment, and application for nuclear and industrial applications
  • Lead or support commercial grade dedication (CGD) of coatings and lining systems, including identification of critical characteristics, development of dedication plans, supplier evaluation, and ensuring compliance with 10 CFR 50 Appendix B quality assurance requirements
  • Develop technical scopes of work, specifications, and inspection plans
  • Evaluate coating degradation, failure mechanisms, and life extension strategies
  • Support field activities including contractor oversight and QA
  • Interface with clients to identify needs and develop follow-on work
  • Contribute to business development by identifying opportunities, developing proposals and engaging with clients
  • Collaborate internally to cross sell SI offerings, bundle services, and expand scope
  • Develop standardized approaches and best practices
  • Author and review technical reports, test plans, and client deliverables
  • Engage in client consulting, troubleshooting, and field application support

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Materials Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5–15+ years in coatings, corrosion, linings, or asset integrity
  • Direct experience supporting commercial grade dedication (CGD) of materials or components and working within 10 CFR 50 Appendix B nuclear quality assurance programs
  • Experience in specification, inspection, assessment, or rehabilitation
  • Strong client-facing and communication skills
  • Ability to support business development activities
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills
  • Ability to travel (~15–30%) to support client projects, testing, and business development
  • Ability to obtain Nuclear Unescorted Access Authorization (UAA) as required

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • >10 years of experience in the Nuclear Industry or similar field
  • Experience with coatings and polymers under extreme service environments (radiation, high temperature, corrosive media)
  • Direct experience collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Familiarity with Nuclear Industry materials challenges (e.g., degradation, life extension, advanced reactor applications)
  • Familiarity of standards and testing protocols for nuclear and industrial coatings, such as ASTM (including Committee D33), AMPP/NACE, SSPC surface preparation standards, AWWA coating standards, and applicable nuclear requirements (e.g., 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, EPRI guidance, LR/SLR activities).
  • Familiarity with internal linings, tanks, buried piping, or AWWA systems
  • AMPP/NACE CIP certification
  • Experience managing coating contractors in industrial field settings
  • Knowledge of corrosion mitigation and cathodic protection integration
  • Polymer/materials science background

What Success Looks Like:

Success in this role is demonstrated by establishing credibility as a trusted coatings and corrosion advisor to clients, contributing to measurable growth in the coatings-related project pipeline, and effectively integrating coatings services with existing offerings such as cathodic protection, MAPPro, and broader program support. The role will also play a key part in supporting the qualification and deployment of coatings systems within nuclear environments, including commercial grade dedication (CGD) and alignment with 10 CFR 50 Appendix B requirements. Over time, this position will help develop repeatable, scalable service offerings that can be consistently applied across multiple sites and clients.

Why This Role:

This position provides the opportunity to build and shape a new technical capability within an established nuclear consulting organization, with direct influence on strategic growth initiatives. This role offers access to an existing client base with immediate expansion opportunities, while also allowing the individual to contribute to a differentiated service offering that includes coatings qualification and deployment within nuclear quality frameworks, such as CGD and Appendix B environments. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence both the technical direction of coatings services and the overall market approach for this emerging service line.

Pay Range:

The salary for this role will be commensurate with experience and location. For candidates in Denver, CO, the expected salary range is $104,080 to 144,400. For candidates in San Jose, CA, the expected salary range is $123,040 to $171,000. For candidates in Huntersville, NC, the expected salary range is $96,880 to $135,000.
