Director of Platform Engineering

Job description

We are looking for a Director of Platform Engineering to lead the evolution of our Internal Developer Platform (IDP).

The Platform functional area is what enables our applications teams to deliver product features at a higher pace, with reduced co-ordination, via self-service APIs, tools, services, knowledge and support.

In this non-traditional leadership role, you will act as an architect and developer advocate, removing bureaucratic friction and aligning infrastructure, security, and observability to ensure our application teams can deliver at pace via high-trust, self-service tools.

In this role, you will…

  • Co-develop Strategic Direction: Partner with Platform SMEs and internal customers to co-create a platform roadmap that accelerates time-to-market and improves developer experience.
  • Build Scalable Architecture: Champion modular, cloud-native standards and Kubernetes to replace legacy, bespoke configurations.
  • Develop an Ownership Culture: Shape a culture where responsibility is to one’s peers and the “internal customer” (the developer), all while enabling application teams to fully own what they produce.
  • Support Tech Innovation: Drive the adoption of modern tools and emerging tech, including AI and Agentic AI, within platform engineering.
  • Remove Friction: Dismantle bureaucratic gates by automating security and policy compliance directly within the CI/CD pipeline.
  • Manage Incident Response: Coordinate and support the cross-functional incident response team, ensuring rapid resolution and actionable post-mortems.

Your day-to-day work and responsibilities include…

  • Building the Right Thing: Propose or provide feedback on every platform roadmap item with each of our teams.
  • Mentorship & Care: Focus on a “span of care” rather than “span of control,” driving impact through coaching, proficiency, and team growth.
  • Support Autonomy: Move from top-down resource allocation to enabling teams to identify dependencies and pull resources independently.
  • Bring Transparency: Act as a channel rather than a shield, providing teams with direct access to information and resources.

This position is for you if you have…

  • SME Expertise:  Hands-on experience building Internal Developer Platforms on Kubernetes, understanding the Cloud Native landscape, and being able to navigate the complexities of multi-cloud architectures.
  • Multidisciplinary Depth: Hands-on proficiency across IaC, CI/CD, API design, observability, and core software development.
  • Growth Mindset: View the workplace as a place for personal growth, finding joy in your own as well as the personal and professional evolution of your peers.
  • Influential Leadership: Enable organizational change through empathy, logic, and expertise rather than positional authority.
  • Complexity Thinking: Understand the organization as a complex adaptive system in which scaling occurs through emergence and decentralized interactions, not by adding more layers of oversight.
  • Contextual Decision-Making: Share information broadly to empower decisions to happen as close to the “customer” as possible.

Benefits we offer…

  • Competitive compensation package, including equity
  • Great work equipment, and home office allowance for those working in our fully remote locations
  • Health care benefit and leisure time insurance
  • Annual 1000 euros of personal learning budget
  • Sports and well-being allowance

Benefits may vary depending on location.
