Director of Development

Job description

The opportunity

Our client is hiring an experienced Director of Development to lead and scale its software development function. In this senior leadership role, you will be responsible for both protecting and growing the business through strong stewardship of existing products and the disciplined development of new solutions.

Reporting to the General Manager, you will lead multiple development teams accountable for maintaining and enhancing current products that underpin recurring revenue. You will partner with leadership to identify, research, and execute on new product development opportunities. Operating at the intersection of strategy and execution, you will translate divisional priorities into a clear product roadmap and ensure delivery through well-structured development practices.

A key focus of this role will be modernizing the organization’s technology stack. You will oversee the evolution of existing platforms, including legacy environments, and guide the migration toward more modern, web-based architectures. Operating at the intersection of strategy and execution, you will translate divisional priorities into a clear product roadmap and ensure delivery through strong engineering practices, modern development tooling, and continuous improvement.

As the organization continues to evolve, you will also explore how emerging technologies, such as AI and machine learning, can be thoughtfully applied to improve efficiency, enhance product functionality, and strengthen the customer experience.

This is a remote role based in the US.

Why this role?

This is an opportunity to play a meaningful leadership role within a growing software organization, shaping how the business scales while preserving the quality, stability, and reliability that clients depend on. You will have real influence over how work gets done, bringing clarity, structure, and consistency to complex development operations. You will establish strong operating rhythms and delivery discipline across a large, distributed group of technical teams. With oversight of approximately 30 indirect reports spanning full-stack development, product-aligned delivery teams, architecture, Agile delivery, DevOps, and quality-focused roles, you will provide the structure, support, and strategic direction teams are seeking to deliver predictable outcomes and build customer confidence.

You will join a mission-driven organization that values empowering leadership, strong collaboration, and a healthy team culture. The role offers remote flexibility and the opportunity to drive meaningful change, balancing autonomy with accountability in a high-impact environment.

For the right leader, there is also long-term upside. This role provides visibility across the business and exposure to broader enterprise leadership, with potential pathways into general management or executive roles within the organization or across its broader group of companies, based on performance and interest.

Ultimately, this is a chance to establish yourself as a trusted, influential leader - shaping the future of the business while building durable systems, strong teams, and long-term value.

You will:

  • Set and lead divisional development strategy. You will work closely with senior leadership to create and evolve a division-wide strategy, aligning technology direction with business priorities and growth objectives.
  • Translate strategy into a clear product roadmap. You will define and communicate key milestones through a well-structured product roadmap, ensuring alignment across teams and stakeholders while maintaining focus on value delivery.
  • Drive execution through strong cross-functional engagement. You will partner with architects and product owners to translate the product roadmap into executable development plans, guiding teams through delivery while removing obstacles and managing dependencies.
  • Establish release discipline and quality standards. You will define release criteria, cadence, and supporting processes so clients experience consistent, reliable quality across all product releases.
  • Build and scale high-performing development teams. You will recruit, lead, mentor, and develop software development teams, creating an environment of accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
  • Embed Agile practices that deliver value quickly. You will establish and mature Agile practices that keep the customer at the centre, promote rapid feedback, and enable predictable delivery on a regular release cadence.
  • Lead technology research and evolution. You will guide technology research and support activities, ensuring the division remains current, secure, and positioned to adopt tools and approaches that support long-term scalability.

You bring:

  • The technical foundation. You bring hands-on experience in full-stack software development, giving you the credibility to guide development decisions that balance risk, cost, timeline, and quality. You have worked within modern delivery environments, including CI/CD pipelines across on-premises and cloud infrastructures, and have experience delivering software through Agile methodologies and regular release cadences.
  • The modern engineering skill set. You have experience working with Delphi and understand how to migrate legacy functionality to modern, web-based architectures using technologies such as Angular and .NET. You are proficient in C#, .NET, and JavaScript frameworks, and bring curiosity and working familiarity with AI/ML technologies and how they can be applied to improve efficiency and product capability.
  • The product focus. You have experience translating business objectives into clear product strategies and roadmaps. You understand how to balance investment in existing products with new development initiatives, ensuring alignment between customer needs, technical direction, and divisional growth goals.
  • The business and operational judgment. You have managed and forecast development-related financials and understand how development decisions impact budgets, delivery commitments, and business outcomes. You make sound, timely trade-offs, identify gaps early, and implement practical improvements that strengthen execution and long-term sustainability.
  • The leadership. You have experience directing teams and managing resources in complex environments. You are comfortable leading through influence and example, setting clear expectations, managing competing priorities, and holding teams accountable for delivery. You bring hands-on experience across hiring, development, performance management, mentoring, and team growth.
  • The relationship-building skills. You have exceptional verbal and written communication skills and can build trusting, collaborative, and influential relationships across technical and non-technical stakeholders. You work effectively with diverse teams and bring a respectful, inclusive, and steady approach to leadership.
