Developing technology and research to protect children from online sexual abuse and exploitation.

About Thorn

We are a nonprofit founded in 2012. We develop technology and conduct research to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation in digital spaces. This includes creating tools to defend children from grooming, sextortion, and child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Our goal is to eliminate CSAM from the internet.

We give platforms and people the technology and resources to quickly identify victims and stop the spread of abusive material. Over 700 law enforcement agencies use our tools, which have flagged more than 10.1 million suspected CSAM files for removal. We’ve processed 509 billion files to detect sexual abuse material. In 2024 alone, we detected over 4.1 million suspected CSAM files and processed over 3 million lines of text to identify child exploitation. Our victim identification tools are used in 36 countries.

We also research and collaborate on emerging threats like generative AI-related harms and financial sextortion.

Mission & Values

Our mission is to transform how children are protected from sexual abuse and exploitation in the digital age. We aim to eliminate child sexual abuse material (CSAM) from the internet and build a safer world where every child can have a joyful childhood, free from harm.

Our core values—trust, inclusion, and resilience—shape how we work and interact. We are “critically committed,” always prioritizing our mission. We are “whole-istically human,” emphasizing wellness, care, and compassion. We drive “transformational tech,” constantly improving and solving problems with technology. And we focus on “purposeful growth” for both individuals and our organization.
