Truth Initiative

We were established in 1999 as America’s largest nonprofit public health organization, following the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement. Our goal is to prevent youth and young adult nicotine addiction and help people quit. We combine behavior change strategies with policy change initiatives.

We make an impact at both the population and individual levels. Our national public education campaigns, like truth®, helped reduce youth smoking from 23% in 2000 to under 2% today and have also lowered youth e-cigarette use. The Outsmart Nicotine campaign targets young adults (18-24) where e-cigarette use is common, introducing them to our EX Program.

Our free EX Program was developed over 15 years ago with the Mayo Clinic. Research shows that using the EX Program can increase your chances of quitting nicotine by up to 40%. The program is available via SMS, web, and mobile platforms. We also conduct research, lead policy efforts, and provide in-school curriculums.

We envision a future free from nicotine addiction, where people live healthier lives and our nation is more resilient. Our mission is to prevent youth and young adult nicotine addiction and help everyone quit, creating a culture where young people reject smoking, vaping, and nicotine.

This guides our efforts to advance public health, address inequities, and help individuals live free from the physical, mental, and financial consequences of nicotine dependence. We are committed to creating meaningful change through both population-level policies and empowering individuals, always driven by science and data.

Truth Initiative has over 130 staff members with expertise in research, marketing, policy, law, communications, community engagement, and operations. The organization seeks to attract and retain individuals who thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Truth Initiative prioritizes employee engagement and workplace satisfaction. Employees can join various volunteer committees, such as the Diversity, Fun, Environmental & Service, and Health & Wellness Committees.
