About Unified Patents
Founded in 2012, we are a member-based organization operating in the legal services industry. We deter abusive patent assertions in specific technology areas, called Zones, which cover Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) and Non-Practicing Entities (NPEs). Our goal is to improve patent quality.
We have over 350 international members, representing more than 3,000 companies. Startups can join for free, while larger companies pay yearly subscriptions. Our activities include patent litigation, post-grant reviews, inter partes reviews, data analytics, prior art searching, patentability analysis, administrative patent reviews (IPR/reexam), amicus briefs, economic surveys, and essentiality studies.
We also offer specialized tools: ISIX (Institutional Success Index) measures law firm success at the PTAB; PATROLL (Prior Art Crowdsourcing) offers financial rewards for prior art assistance; OPAL (Objective Patent Landscape) provides semantic algorithm-based patent landscapes; and OPEN (Standards Repository) is a searchable database of standards submissions.
Additionally, we provide free patent and dispute data, including an Annual Report, Examiner data, Litigation data, Patent quality ratings (APIX, CITX, BRIX), and daily updated PTAB dockets.

Unified Patents’ approach focuses on deterring abusive Non-Practicing Entities (NPEs) by challenging unsubstantiated or invalid patent assertions in defined technology sectors. The organization never pays money to NPEs, aiming to avoid incentivizing further NPE activity. Unified operates independently of its members, making decisions on challenges, including potential settlements (which are never for money, but for a license), based on its long-term deterrence goals.
Unified Patents offers highly competitive salaries, significant bonuses, and flexible work arrangements including the option to work from home or office. Employees receive flexible hours, significant vacation time, and full health and dental benefit coverage.
Unified Patents operates as an independent, member-based organization. It does not act as a law firm for its members and does not have an attorney-client relationship. Unified retains sole discretion over all aspects of its post-grant challenges, including identifying prior art, conducting patentability analysis, deciding whether to file, preparing and prosecuting petitions, and terminating challenges. Members do not receive advance notice of Unified’s actions or have control over its use of post-grant proceedings. Subscription fees for specific zones are not used for activities in other zones, excluding administrative overhead.
