About Yard Stick PBC
We measure soil carbon using in-situ technology. We develop and provide technologies to collect soil carbon measurements instantly and affordably, aiming to reduce measurement costs by over 90%. Our tools help plan sample layouts with statistical and agronomic rigor for protocols like Verra VM0042 and CAR SEP, and our systems map, track, audit, and share soil carbon data.
We also offer full soil carbon measurement services, handling the entire process once we receive field boundaries. Our technology uses visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VisNIR) to measure soil organic carbon up to 45 cm deep.
We were founded in 2021 and operate as a Public Benefit Corporation in the farming, ranching, and forestry industries. We currently have 11-50 employees.
Mission & Values
Our mission is to achieve climate impact using soil carbon measurement technologies.
We believe soils play a crucial role in the climate crisis. We aim to overcome the historical challenges of accurately and affordably measuring soil organic carbon (SOC).
By making measurements more affordable and rigorous, we want to expand opportunities for evidence-based, climate-positive agriculture and ranching practices. These practices can improve ecosystem health, increase farmer and rancher livelihoods, restore soil health, and combat climate change.
Team & Culture
We have a team of 11-50 employees and are always looking for new funders, scientific advisors, and team members to join us.
Our co-founders are Kevin Meissner, Chief Engineer, and Chris Tolles, CEO. Our scientific advisors include Dr. Cristine Morgan, Chief Scientific Officer at the Soil Health Institute and Adjunct Professor at Texas A&M University, and Dr. Jason Ackerson, Research Soil Scientist at the Soil Health Institute.
