This role

We’re on the hunt for a high-impact Senior Software Engineer to join one of our most strategically important squads at Employment Hero.

In this role, you’ll be among the first engineers shaping a new fintech product that integrates with our existing payroll ecosystem. This product will handle complex and regulated financial operations across multiple regions. It’s an ambitious undertaking that requires secure, scalable, and well-architected systems.

As an early member of the squad, you’ll take on a pivotal role in both technical direction and hands-on development. You’ll work across discovery, architecture, implementation, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure this product meets the highest standards of security, performance, and reliability.

Your key responsibilities will include

  • Designing and building backend systems that power financial automation workflows for payroll-related use cases
  • Translating business and compliance requirements into reliable, secure engineering solutions
  • Owning the design and implementation of distributed systems, internal APIs, and key integrations
  • Collaborating with stakeholders from product, engineering, and compliance to balance innovation with regulatory standards
  • Championing technical quality and maintainability through best practices, documentation, and knowledge sharing
  • Helping shape a strong, remote-first engineering culture

Who you are

For this role, you’ll also bring

  • At least 5 years of experience as a Senior Backend Engineer, including delivering complex systems in fintech, payments, banking, or compliance-sensitive domains
  • Strong capabilities in backend architecture, system design, and simplifying complex requirements into scalable solutions
  • Comfort working in cloud-native environments, ideally AWS
  • Proficiency in one or more modern backend languages such as Ruby, Go, Java, Node, or Python. Ruby experience is a plus but not required
  • Ownership mindset and confidence in debugging and maintaining systems in production
  • Clear communication and async collaboration skills, especially when working across distributed teams and time zones

Nice to have

  • Experience with payroll systems, payment gateways, or integrations with financial institutions
  • Familiarity with security standards, AML/KYC practices, or working with external compliance partners
  • Experience launching greenfield products or being an early engineer in a new team
