About Story Time Chess
We founded Story Time Chess in 2011, headquartered in New York City. Our program teaches chess to children, starting as young as three. Previously known as Chess at Three, we use a story-based curriculum that explains chess piece movements and rules through fun narratives and characters.
We offer private and group lessons with Certified Story Tellers. These are available in your home, online, or at our club in Park Slope, Brooklyn. We also provide a cloud-based platform for educators to teach our curriculum in schools. Our programs include NYC clubs, camps, and in-school initiatives. In Singapore, we also offer playgroups for infants (as young as six months) and role-playing games for school-aged children.
We have taught over 50,000 students in more than 1 million lessons. We partner with over 600 schools and employ more than 400 tutors. Our curriculum aims to teach chess and help children with critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and self-confidence. We also see improvements in their academic performance, verbal skills, and test scores.
Mission & Values
Our mission is to teach children important life skills like critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and self-confidence through interactive stories and games like chess.
Our core beliefs are:
- We recognize the power of a child’s mind, imagination, and their ability to learn.
- We believe storytelling is a strong and effective way to share knowledge.
- We emphasize that having fun should not mean compromising on excellence.
- We value soft skills like emotional intelligence and sportsmanship (for example, shaking hands after a game) as much as the game itself.
We focus on building empathy, self-confidence, and sportsmanship alongside teaching chess.
Team & Culture
We have a team of 201-500 employees. Our work environment focuses on storytelling, education, and creativity, making learning feel like play.
Our tutors connect with children using creative stories and characters, whether in classrooms, online, or in homes. We look for people who enjoy working with children, believe in the power of storytelling, and want to make a difference every day. We are a growing company and are always looking for enthusiastic people to join us.
Our co-founders are Harlan Alford, Jon Sieber, and Tyler Schwartz.
