Equipping Southern leaders and communities to improve economic mobility and advance equity

About MDC

We are a nonprofit organization founded in 1967 and based in Durham, N.C. We equip Southern leaders, institutions, and communities to improve economic mobility and advance equity. We do this by bringing together foundations, nonprofits, and leaders from government, business, and the grassroots to analyze data and develop systemic community solutions.

Our approach involves research, consensus-building, and programs that connect education, employment, and economic security. We aim to foster prosperity through an “infrastructure of opportunity.”

Since 1996, we have produced “State of the South” reports that inform the region’s economic agenda, covering historic trends, inequities, and solutions for both rural and urban communities. Our work is supported by grants and contracts from foundations, governments, and the private sector.

Our specialties include strategic philanthropy, community development, asset building, postsecondary education, economic & social mobility, early childhood education, learning differences, and integrated services delivery. We run programs like Rural Prosperity and Investment and Educational Equity, which focus on community-driven capacity building and public policy initiatives.

Mission & Values

Our mission is to improve economic mobility and advance equity in the Southern United States. We help communities foster prosperity by creating an “infrastructure of opportunity”—aligned systems and supports designed to boost individuals, especially those who have been marginalized, to higher economic standing.

Our values include a commitment to racial equity and systems change. We emphasize inclusive and equity-centered approaches in our work.

Team & Culture

We have 11-50 employees. Our work environment is hybrid/remote, with occasional in-person meetings. Some positions require travel across North Carolina, the South, or the Southeast U.S.

Our culture emphasizes collaboration, community impact, growth, and intentional professional development and coaching. Employees engage in mentorship, interprofessional practice, and participate in internal committees and conferences. We focus on amplifying the voice and power of rural stakeholders.

Benefits & Perks

We offer health, dental, and vision insurance, along with short-term and long-term disability and life insurance. Employees receive vacation, sick, and personal leave, holiday pay, and a full week off for Winter Break in late December.

Optional Summer Pause Fridays are available in July and August, allowing for a 12pm finish. Additional benefits include an employee assistance program, wellness benefits, and a remote work stipend. We provide paid retirement account contributions with a match, travel reimbursement, and conference attendance allotments.

We support professional development through intentional coaching and opportunities focused on facilitation, coalition building, and equity-centered practices. Interns may also receive a Dan Broun Award with an additional stipend and participate in a structured, year-long learning experience.
