Convergent Research

We are a non-profit organization founded in 2021. We identify scientific bottlenecks and launch Focused Research Organizations (FROs). FROs are scientific institutions created to tackle projects that are too big for academic labs, need more coordination than consortia, and aren’t profitable enough for venture-backed startups or industrial R&D. These ambitious, temporary initiatives create high-value public goods —like new technologies and infrastructure —that accelerate scientific discovery. We provide shared operational support to these FROs.

For example, [C]Worthy is a FRO that develops C-Star, an open-source toolkit for advanced ocean modeling. They also created the OAE Efficiency Map for Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement. Another FRO, PTI, is a non-profit research institute developing mass tags for multiplexed protein analysis using mass spectrometry.

Our mission is to accelerate scientific progress by creating new types of organizations. We act as a hub for frontier technology, identifying scientific bottlenecks and launching non-profit startups to build foundational capabilities. Each Focused Research Organization (FRO) aims to produce high-value public goods that accelerate scientific progress.

We have 51-200 employees and support teams building essential infrastructure for scientific breakthroughs. Our work environment is flexible, with options for remote-first, hybrid, or in-person arrangements depending on the role. Some positions are location-specific, like those with office expectations in Boulder, CO, or in the Northeast corridor, which may require travel for quarterly offsites and team meetings.
