About Emojipedia

Founded in 2013 by Jeremy Burge, we are an online reference site dedicated to emojis, serving 300 million definitions annually. We provide up-to-date information on emoji meanings, history, and designs, including official names sourced from the Unicode Standard.

We feature an Emoji Playground for games and creation tools, showcase featured emoji combinations, and include sections for emojis related to upcoming events and the latest news. As of September 2024, we track 3,790 emojis recommended for support across various platforms. Emojipedia is owned by Zedge, Inc.

Team & Culture

We have a small team of 1-10 individuals. Our Editor-in-Chief, Keith Broni, took over in January 2022. He oversees daily operations, which include researching global emoji use and monitoring changes to emoji design sets.

Our emoji definitions are written by experts and lexicographers, not crowd-sourced. Current contributors include Keith Broni and David Doochin, with past contributions from Jane Solomon and Jeremy Burge. When assessing emoji meanings, we consider historical context, intended meaning, common real-world use, global alternative meanings, and cross-platform design details.
