Job Description

EvenUp is on a mission to close the justice gap using technology and AI. We empower personal injury lawyers and victims to get the justice they deserve. Our products enable law firms to secure faster settlements, higher payouts, and better outcomes for victims injured through no fault of their own in vehicle collisions, accidents, natural disasters, and more.

We are one of the fastest-growing vertical SaaS companies in history, and we are just getting started. EvenUp is backed by top VCs, including Bessemer Venture Partners, Bain Capital Ventures, SignalFire, and Lightspeed. We are looking to expand our team with talented, driven, and collaborative individuals who seek to have a lasting impact. Learn more at www.evenuplaw.com.

We are seeking an exceptional lawyer to join our Knowledge Management & Applied Research Team as a Practice Innovation Counsel. This role does not fit neatly into a traditional box. It is part subject matter expert, part product partner, part solutions architect. You will develop deep expertise in the practice areas we serve, help translate that expertise into the systems that generate our legal work product at scale, and serve as an in-house legal resource for teams across the company.

The person who thrives here is a strong lawyer who would rather help build the system that drafts than draft the next document by hand: someone who can pick up an unfamiliar area of law quickly, reduce it to a structure a model can execute reliably, and explain that structure to engineers, product managers, and data scientists in terms they can build against.

This is a hybrid role with the expectation of working at least 3 days a week from our office hub in San Francisco.

What You’ll Do:

  • Help build the drafting systems behind our AI-generated work product by decomposing how an expert lawyer reasons through a document into explicit decision trees, defining what every conclusion has to be anchored to in the record, and refining that logic against real output until it holds up across cases.

  • Develop working mastery in unfamiliar practice areas on short timelines, including the governing statutory and regulatory framework, procedural posture, controlling authority, evidentiary standards, and document conventions. Become the internal authority the rest of the company relies on.

  • Translate legal judgment into product requirements by partnering with Product, Data Science, and Machine Learning teams to convert “what a good lawyer would do here” into specifications, taxonomies, and evaluation criteria that non-lawyers can build against.

  • Maintain and expand EvenUp’s knowledge base and case-specific templates, including firm and state-level customization in partnership with clients, for personal injury claims today and for additional practice areas as we expand into them.

  • Conduct legal research on liability and damages nationwide, monitor statutory and common law changes, and mentor the Legal Operations Team on evolving legal standards.

  • Lead quality assurance efforts through audits, benchmarking, and evaluation development to support model evaluation.

  • Work directly with clients when the moment calls for it, walking a firm through how a document was built, gathering requirements firsthand, and carrying what you hear back to the team.

  • Serve as an in-house legal expert for teams across the company, advising on substantive questions as they arise and surfacing risk before it reaches a client deliverable.

What We Look For:

  • Active license to practice law and in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.

  • 5+ years of substantive legal experience, with real depth in personal injury litigation across multiple states: statutory and common law frameworks, first- and third-party bad faith claims involving all types of insurance coverage, and a strong grasp of recoverable damages and their limitations.

  • A track record of developing mastery in more than one practice area. You have moved between substantive areas of law and can point to a time you became the person colleagues came to on an unfamiliar subject in weeks, not years.

  • Exceptional legal drafting skills and meticulous attention to detail across all forms of written communication, with a track record of producing complex documents such as pre- and post-litigation demands, medical summaries, written discovery responses, and legal memoranda.

  • The ability to turn legal knowledge into actionable, unambiguous direction for non-lawyers. You can explain a doctrinal edge case to an engineer or data scientist in terms they can build against, and you can tell the difference between an instruction that sounds clear and one that actually is.

  • Working fluency with large language models. You use them in real substantive work, you have a concrete sense of where they fail, and you have opinions about how to get better output.

  • Genuine curiosity, and comfort with ambiguity. The people who do best in this role chase down how something works because they want to know, not because someone assigned it. We weight this more heavily than any single credential on this list. This function is new, and you will be defining parts of it as you go.

Nice to Haves:

Preferred, not required. Nobody is expected to arrive with all of this.

  • You would describe yourself as AI-native, or you vibe-code. You have built something (a script, a skill, an agent, a workflow) without waiting for an engineer, and you are comfortable working in tools like Claude Code or Cursor.

  • Comfort in front of clients. This is not a sales role, but you will periodically be the expert in the room with a law firm, and it helps to be credible and at ease there, including when the answer is that you need to go find out.
