About International Geothermal Association
We founded the International Geothermal Association (IGA) in 1988 in The Hague, Netherlands, to connect the global geothermal community. We provide a space for networking, promote geothermal development, and advance geothermal energy globally through innovation, policy, and partnerships. We offer practical information to guide policy and practice, representing the geothermal industry worldwide.
We offer several services. We host the World Geothermal Congress every three years and organize annual regional events covering policy, regulations, funding, and technology. The IGA Academy provides training programs, including online courses, field trips, and webinars on geothermal energy. “Geothermal Insights” is our annual collection of global geothermal data, detailing installed capacity, use for agriculture, health, and industry, and whether it’s for direct use or electricity production. This data is gathered by our team and affiliated national associations. We also advocate for the geothermal sector worldwide, influencing policy and promoting industry growth and sustainable development through events, publications, position papers, lobbying, and partnerships with international groups.
We have 60 Corporate Members globally, covering the full range of geothermal energy operations, and 30 Affiliated Organizations, which include national associations and academic groups. Our work spans 88 countries, focusing on geothermal power, heating, and cooling. Our GLOBAL_GT campaign is a 12-month initiative that highlights geothermal innovation, impact, and leadership in 12 regions, leading up to the World Geothermal Congress in 2026.
