Transmission & Power Markets Engineer

💰 $88k-$100k

Job Description

Do you want to be a part of the clean energy movement? Are you passionate about improving our environment for this generation and those to follow? Are you ready to take on new challenges and collaborate with a future-focused team leading the way into new markets? Join Nexamp!

This is where you can learn from industry leaders and become one yourself. It’s fast-paced, mission-based work that challenges the status quo. Be on the team that’s changing the world.

What we’re looking for:

The Transmission & Power Markets Engineer supports Nexamp’s Utility-Scale Solar + Storage Business Development team by leading the analytical work needed to understand transmission and interconnection opportunities, risks, and costs across target ISO/ RTOs. This role evaluates transmission constraints, pricing, congestion, and curtailment risk to inform site selection, queue strategy, project sizing, and investment decisions for utility-scale solar and storage projects. It is well-suited to candidates with a power systems background or technical project/program management experience in the power sector who are comfortable owning analytical workstreams while coordinating cross-functional stakeholders.

We are accepting candidates across our offices of Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Austin, TX, etc. where you will be hybrid. You will report to the Manager, Transmission & Market Analytics.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead transmission and interconnection analysis for utility-scale solar and storage projects across target ISO/RTOs (e.g., MISO, PJM, NYISO, ERCOT, etc.), including assessment of headroom, constraints, congestion, and curtailment risk.
  • Plan and execute analytical workstreams (including 3rdparty studies) for each project including defining scope and assumptions, coordinating timelines with interconnection and development milestones, and tracking study status, risks, and decisions.
  • Perform and/or direct power system analyses (e.g., load flow, contingency, transfer capability, hosting capacity) and market analytics, translating results into clear commercial metrics and recommendations (e.g., POI choice, queue vintage, hybrid vs. solar only, storage sizing).
  • Manage and coordinate external consultants performing technical and economic evaluations (e.g., PSS/E, TARA/PSLF studies, congestion/capacity market analytics), ensuring high quality deliverables, alignment with Nexamp’s objectives, and effective handoff to internal stakeholders.
  • Synthesize complex analysis into decision ready materials (slides, memos, dashboards) that clearly articulate options, risks, and tradeoffs for Business Development, Finance, and senior leadership.
  • Track and communicate market and policy changes (e.g., LRTP/RTEP, queue reforms, cost allocation, major network upgrades) and maintain trackers of key network projects and neighboring generators that affect project headroom, congestion, and strategy.
  • Support interconnection and commercial strategy by contributing to cluster applications, reapplications, material modification decisions, and transaction diligence, and by providing ad hoc analytics to greenfield development, M&A, regulatory, and finance teams as needed.

What you’ll bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related engineering/quantitative field (e.g., power systems, energy systems, physics with environmental science focus) with strong exposure to power systems or electricity markets.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in power systems, transmission planning, interconnection, market analytics, or technical project/program management in the power sector (utility, ISO/RTO, IPP, or consulting).
  • Solid understanding of the electric transmission system, including concepts such as thermal limits, voltage performance, contingency analysis, transfer capability, and congestion.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel and other data tools (e.g., SQL, Python, Power BI, or similar) to organize, analyze, and visualize data.
  • Proven experience managing complex technical projects or study workstreams, including scoping, timeline management, coordination of contributors, and clear communication of status, risks, and decisions.
  • Ability to synthesize complex technical and commercial topics into clear, concise outputs for nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Hands on use of power system analysis tools such as Siemens PSS/E, PowerGEM TARA, PSLF, or similar is a plus.
  • Experience as a technical project manager/engineer or program manager supporting grid, interconnection, or market analytics initiatives is a plus.
  • Prior experience with MISO, PJM, ERCOT, NYISO, CAISO, or other ISO/RTO interconnection processes, including cluster studies, milestone structures, and upgrade cost allocation is a plus.
  • Commitment to Nexamp’s mission and have a passion for solving tomorrow’s climate crisis today.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively communicating information, ideas, and perspectives with people inside and beyond your organization.
  • Experience in showcasing initiative to make improvements to current work, processes, products, and services across the organization. We value accountability and an ownership mentality.
  • Ability to ask appropriate questions, analyze data, identify the root causes of problems, and present creative solutions.
  • Expertise in building strong internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders, instilling trust and loyalty across the industry.
  • Eagerness to develop a fundamental understanding of how Nexamp operates and then apply that knowledge effectively to inform business decisions.

If you don’t meet 100% of the above qualifications, but see yourself contributing, please apply.
