Code for America, founded in 2009, is a civic and social organization that combines technology, nonprofit work, and government expertise. We help government work effectively for everyone by using technology thoughtfully. We develop digital tools and transform government by involving communities in policy and service design. We use insights from real people to create solutions that meet community needs and improve government functions. We specialize in software, policy, tech, government, and civic tech.

We design, automate, and secure cloud infrastructure for AI applications. This includes building Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and CI/CD pipelines, and implementing secure deployment practices to meet compliance standards like SOC 2, HIPAA, and NIST 800-53. We lead the technical and AI vision, overseeing engineering, architecture, and AI stewardship. We provide technical guidance to government partners to improve service delivery, connecting older government systems with modern civic technology. Our work covers areas like Criminal Justice, Tax Benefits, and the Social Safety Net. We apply human-centered service design to public services. This means mapping current and future states and developing design solutions within policy and technology limits. We also establish scalable, bilingual (English-Spanish) content design practices, creating and maintaining accessibility standards. We deliver user-centered digital services and develop strategies for digital service delivery and systems change. We engage in business development, securing government contracts and forming partnerships with state and local agencies. We also lead responsible government AI adoption by forming partnerships and influencing public sector leaders.

Code for America has 201-500 employees. Our team includes technologists, advocates, and storytellers from diverse backgrounds and communities nationwide. We operate in a multidisciplinary, remote-friendly environment, with many roles allowing remote work within the United States. Our culture is supportive, mission-driven, and equity-centered. We have a fast-paced, collaborative environment that values transparency, fairness, developer velocity, and best practices. Our cross-functional teams collaborate with designers, researchers, engineers, product managers, policy experts, and government partners. We observe collaborative core hours between 10 AM and 3 PM PT.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package.

For your work environment, you’ll receive a laptop, a $700 remote setup stipend (including a $200 stipend and up to $500 reimbursement), and a $50 monthly cell phone or internet reimbursement.

We support your professional development with a $1000 annual stipend (prorated at hire). Up to $1000 of this can roll over each year (maximum $2000).

Our retirement/401k plan includes:

• A 100% employer match up to 3% of your contribution if you’ve been with us for less than 3 years.
• For employees with 3 or more years, we match 100% up to 3% and an additional 50% over 3%, up to a 5% total contribution.

We provide full medical, dental, and vision benefits. We contribute up to 80% of dependent/family coverage, and some plans offer up to 100% coverage.

Time off includes:

• Open personal time off.
• A minimum of 16 paid holidays annually, plus an organization-wide closure from Christmas Day through New Year’s Day.
• Up to 96 hours of paid sick time annually.

We also offer competitive paid parental and family leave, and a 4-week paid sabbatical after 4 years of service (with an option for up to 4 additional weeks unpaid).

Most roles allow remote work anywhere in the US (your main residence must be in the US). We have a 40-hour work week (Monday-Friday) with collaborative core hours from 10 AM to 3 PM PT.

We maintain transparent salary bands; for example, an annual range is $128,945 to $157,850.
