About the Role (your why)
Our Infrastructure & Operations Team are responsible for providing reliable, secure, and scalable technical environments to support both Datacom and our customers across New Zealand. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you’ll take a leading role in implementing initiatives that enhance client operational standards, drive consistency in delivery, and ensure our technology environment remains robust and high performing. Working across Datacom’s corporate infrastructure, you’ll operate, maintain and improve systems software, hardware, and cloud services while providing technical support and mentorship to your peers.
Our offices are based in New Zealand and the team is hybrid with 2 days minimum in office and 3 days work from home.

What you’ll do
At the moment, as Senior Systems Engineer you will be focused on:
- Operating, maintaining, and improving Datacom’s technical infrastructure across corporate hardware, software, and cloud platforms.
- Designing and implementing solutions that align with Service Level Agreements and customer requirements
- Providing guidance, technical expertise, and mentorship across Datacom’s engineering teams
- Liaising with vendors and vendor relationship managers to ensure strong support and escalation processes
- Installing, testing and maintaining systems software, operating systems and firmware for assigned projects
- Participating in technology roadmapping, product testing, and feedback loops to ensure proactive capability development
- Monitoring and improving system performance across corporate platforms
- Conducting user requirements analysis and advising customers on systems software and applications design
- Implementing change requests in line with Datacom’s change management standards
- Continuously improving practices through analysis and review
- Ensuring health, safety, and security practices are embedded in daily operations

What you’ll bring
Required experience:
- 6+ years’ experience in server management within professional or managed services environments
- Advanced operating system and application knowledge across Windows and Linux
- Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) and virtualisation technologies
- Proven proficiency in system monitoring, patching methodologies, firmware updates, and security management
- Scripting and automation experience in PowerShell or similar
- Strong analytical, consultative, and problem-solving skills, with an ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders and customers
- Industry certifications such as MCSE, RHCSA, VCP, Azure or AWS
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong time management and prioritisation skills to handle multiple projects, manage competing priorities effectively, and hit the ground running in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.
Nice to have:
- Experience with VMware ESXi, Citrix, and desktop virtualisation
- Experience with Big Fix and PowerShell desirable
- Familiarity with the ITIL framework and change management process in an enterprise environment
- Knowledge of Terraform / Ansible and ability to write playbooks for automation tasks
- Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, Technology or similar discipline
- Exposure to Satellite or Solaris systems operations
