About GIFFORDS
We are an organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, dedicated to saving lives from gun violence. We work to shift culture, change policy, and challenge injustice by advocating for gun safety laws and programs. We mobilize lawmakers and constituents to support lifesaving gun laws and inform Americans about gun safety to inspire action for a safer future.
We operate through two main entities:
- The GIFFORDS Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence researches, writes, enacts, and defends gun violence prevention laws and programs. It was founded nearly 25 years ago (also stated as 30 years ago in other sources) after the mass shooting at 101 California Street in San Francisco. Law Center staff advocate for policies that keep communities safe. The Law Center provides free policy assistance to lawmakers, public officials, and advocates, and engages in impact litigation to advance gun industry accountability.
- The GIFFORDS PAC supports elected officials working to address gun violence. It advocates for policies at both federal and state levels.
We tackle gun violence from many angles, including advocating for universal background checks, analyzing gun violence statistics, and addressing issues like gun suicide, community violence, police shootings, the impact of guns on children, domestic violence, and mass shootings. Since December 2012, we have helped pass hundreds of gun safety laws in 49 states and Washington D.C. Nearly 46,000 Americans die from gun violence each year.
