About Mine Vision Systems
We provide real-time 3D mapping and data collection technology for underground mining. We were founded in 2015, spinning out of the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) and Carnegie Mellon University with initial funding from Gold Fields.
Our main product is the FaceCapture system. This lightweight technology combines image, spatial, and location data to create 3D maps of underground mines. It helps with blast planning, ore characterization, and geotechnical assessments, and supports daily mapping for short-term reconciliation. FaceCapture also improves resource efficiency by collecting data for geology, surveys, and engineering. A key feature is its ability to map unsupported ground from a safe, supported area, which reduces time spent at the mine face.
We work with global mining organizations like Sibanye Stillwater, Oceana Gold, Agnico Eagle, and Hitachi. Customers typically see benefits within 12 months of deploying FaceCapture.
The intellectual property behind FaceCapture began in 2007, when Gold Fields funded NREC to develop an underground mining robot with SLAM-based vision navigation. A major advance in computer vision for 3D navigation occurred in 2010. From 2018 to 2021, we completed over 50 consulting projects with 24 mining companies. FaceCapture officially launched in 2023, after its development was refined through collaborations in 2021.
