Job Description

We are looking for a PoweBI Consultant for a 2 month contract. The role can be home based but we would prefer someone who is able to travel to our offices in London.

Eligible Candidates must have SC clearance.

Role overview

We’re looking for an experienced Power BI Consultant (Contract) to deliver high-quality, client-facing KPI reports embedded within our software products using Power BI Embedded. You’ll take ownership of the reporting layer end-to-end: translating business requirements into robust semantic models and reports, shaping data where needed, and building accurate, performant dashboards aligned to existing wireframes.

This work supports one of our major clients, so accuracy, consistency, and strong QA discipline are essential.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and enhance Power BI reports/dashboards in line with provided wireframes and agreed KPI definitions.

  • Translate business requirements into reporting logic, clarifying metric definitions, filters, and calculation rules with stakeholders.

  • Review available datasets and determine the right approach to support reporting outcomes, including:

  • Creating new datasets where required

  • Transforming/cleansing data

  • Building scalable data models (ideally star-schema / dimensional modelling)

  • Develop and maintain complex DAX measures (time intelligence, allocations, exception logic, segmentation, multi-table calculations).

  • Use SQL to interrogate source data and amend queries to ensure the right shape/grain for reporting and performance.

  • Perform robust self-QA: reconciliation to source data, validation of KPI outputs, edge-case testing, and consistency checks across visuals/pages.

  • Document assumptions, measure logic, and dataset transformations to support maintainability and handover.

Qualifications

Required skills & experience (must-have)

  • Strong experience delivering solutions with Power BI (report building, modelling, Power Query, DAX).
  • Advanced DAX capability, including highly complex measures and performance-aware design.
  • Strong data modelling skills (relationships, grain, dimensional modelling, scalable semantic models).
  • Solid SQL skills with ability to review and amend queries to support dataset creation, transformation, and reporting outcomes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a disciplined approach to QA and validation; comfortable owning accuracy end-to-end.

Nice to have

  • Experience with embedded report optimisation (improving load times and responsiveness via model design, DAX optimisation, reducing visual/query load, aggregations, incremental refresh, etc.).
  • Python skills for data analysis, validation, automation, or data preparation (e.g., supporting QA/reconciliation or shaping datasets).
  • Experience working on KPI reporting in environments where outputs are client-visible and subject to scrutiny/audit.

Deliverables / outcomes

  • Production-ready KPI reports that match wireframes and meet stakeholder expectations.
  • A robust, maintainable semantic model with clearly defined measures and calculations.
  • Documented logic and repeatable QA approach ensuring KPI accuracy and consistency.
  • Where possible, improved embedded user experience through responsive report performance.

Additional Information

OTHER INFORMATION

  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate a pre-existing right to work and travel within the UK. Documentary evidence will be required.
  • All offers are subject to satisfactory vetting, references and occupational health checks.
  • Depending on the nature of the role a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check may also be required along with further vetting checks like SC and NPPV3
