The Tax Manager will report to the Director of Taxation and lead the Company’s indirect tax function, with primary responsibility for sales and use tax, property tax, and telecom-related tax compliance.
This role will also support income tax data gathering, tax accounting, and tax planning initiatives. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who can operate both strategically and tactically driving compliance excellence, process improvements, automation initiatives, and proactive tax risk management in a fast-growing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Indirect Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Lead and manage the end-to-end indirect tax compliance process, partnering with external tax advisors to ensure accurate and timely filing of sales and use tax, property tax, telecom, and other non-income tax returns.
- Review and validate monthly indirect tax accruals; collaborate with Accounting to ensure proper reconciliation and reporting.
- Maintain adequate documentation to support tax positions, calculations, and financial statement disclosures.
- Oversee indirect tax audits and manage resolution of tax notices and inquiries.
Technical Research & Risk Management
- Research and document sales/use and telecom tax issues and provide clear guidance to internal stakeholders.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments; proactively assess impact, risks, and planning opportunities.
- Identify areas of tax exposure and implement corrective actions to minimize risk.
Process Improvement & Systems Optimization
- Partner with Finance and IT to support ERP design, implementation, and enhancements related to indirect tax compliance and automation.
- Evaluate and improve tax-related processes to enhance efficiency, scalability, and internal controls.
- Develop, document, and implement tax policies and procedures as the Company expands into new products and markets.
- Ensure proper collection and maintenance of sales tax exemption certificates and conduct periodic compliance audits.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Collaborate with Accounting, FP&A, Legal, and Operations to ensure tax considerations are incorporated into business decisions.
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders to promote awareness of tax implications and compliance responsibilities.
Strategic Support & Special Projects
- Support income tax data gathering, tax accounting, and tax planning initiatives as needed.
- Participate in company-wide initiatives, acquisitions, system implementations, and other strategic projects.
- Maintain a forward-looking perspective on industry and tax developments impacting the Company’s business model.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Tax, or related field required
- 10+ years of progressive tax experience with strong emphasis on indirect tax (Sales & Use Tax, Property Tax; telecom tax experience preferred)
- Experience managing compliance processes in a multi-state environment
- Strong technical research and analytical skills
- Ability to translate complex tax matters into clear business guidance
- Proven ability to identify process improvements and lead automation initiatives
- Experience analyzing and managing large data sets using Excel, Alteryx, or similar data tools preferred
- Prior experience in the technology and/or telecommunications industry preferred
- CPA or CMI certification preferred
