Job Description
Description
About Recare As one of the leading German HealthTech companies, we are reshaping discharge management – technology-driven, patient-centered, and free from bureaucracy. In addition to our market-leading SaaS platform, we develop AI solutions that radically simplify processes in hospitals and for aftercare providers, relieve healthcare professionals, and refocus attention on patients. Today, we already connect two-thirds of all German hospitals with over 650 rehabilitation clinics and 25,000 nursing and homecare providers. With currently around 100 employees, we continue to grow – and we are looking for people with character who want to help us improve the healthcare system and solve administrative complexity across care journeys in Europe.
What to expect as our Head of AI Engineering (m/w/d):
Purposeful work – your role will have a positive impact on patients, their families, and healthcare professionals.
Company culture – we believe in flat hierarchies that promote high performance and strong team dynamics. We foster an environment characterized by mutual respect, loyalty, and recognition. Together, we strive for our goals – and expect the same from you.
Flexibility – want to pick up your child from daycare? Like to exercise during lunch? We’ll support you. We are a remote-friendly company offering flexible working hours. Workations are also possible by arrangement.
Edenred card – which you can use according to your needs.
Extra vacation day – so you can celebrate your birthday with your loved ones, you’ll have the day off.
In this role, you can make an impact and grow with us as Head of AI Engineering (m/w/d):
You will lead and build Recare’s AI engineering function from a small, high-potential base into a structured, high-performing organization. You will define the architecture across AI platform, applied AI, and agent orchestration, while working hands-on with the team to ship real systems. Your work will directly influence how AI is embedded into healthcare workflows at scale.
You define and own the AI engineering architecture across platform, applied AI, and agent orchestration layers.
You build and scale the AI team – starting hands-on and growing into a structure with sub-teams and leads over time.
You make strategic technical decisions on model selection, infrastructure, and build-vs-buy trade-offs.
You partner closely with product and engineering teams where AI engineers are embedded to ensure alignment and delivery.
You collaborate with the Director of Technology on AI product strategy and priorities.
You challenge assumptions and bring strong technical opinions in areas where the company is still building expertise.
You write code, review PRs, and ship systems alongside the team, especially in the early stages.
You establish standards for AI engineering workflows, including the use of LLM-assisted tooling across development processes.
Youensure that architectural decisions are documented, owned, and evolve with the rapidly changing AI landscape.
Requirements
Here’s how we picture you as our Head of AI Engineering (m/w/d):
Youbring experience in software and AI engineering, with a strong track record of making architectural decisions in production environments.
Youhave deep, hands-on expertise in modern LLM engineering, including prompt architecture, context management, agent orchestration, evaluation frameworks, and observability for AI-native applications.
You understand how quickly model capabilities evolve (reasoning, multimodal, code generation, context windows) and adapt architectural decisions accordingly as the landscape shifts.
Youare technically opinionated and confident challenging approaches, making clear architectural calls, and guiding senior engineers.
You make high-impact strategic technical decisions on model selection, build vs. buy, and infrastructure, balancing quality, latency, cost, and iteration speed.
Youare managerially mature and have experience hiring and growing teams, with the ability to build and lead sub-teams as the organization scales.
Youare comfortable operating as a player-coach – writing code, reviewing PRs, and shipping systems alongside your team, especially in the early stages.
Youare motivated by building from scratch and do not expect a fully established organization, but instead thrive in defining structure, processes, and direction.
Youare clear on the target state of a structured AI organization, while being able to operate pragmatically at a tactical level day-to-day.
You see AI-native tooling as standard practice and have strong opinions on how LLMs should be embedded into engineering workflows (e.g. code review, documentation, testing).
Youare aligned with the ambition to build the leading AI platform in healthcare in Europe and can translate this into concrete technical direction.
You communicate clearly and effectively in a remote-first environment and collaborate well across technical and product stakeholders.
You communicate confidently in English and are comfortable operating in an international environment.
