Role Summary
The Senior Electrical Engineer (High Voltage, Protection & Controls) role leads the design and delivery of protection, control, and communication systems for renewable energy and high-voltage substation projects. This role independently applies extensive and diversified knowledge of protection and control engineering principles across a portfolio of projects and serves as a technical leader within the High Voltage team.
The Senior Electrical Engineer oversees complex, multi-phase project execution from preliminary design through commissioning, ensuring technical excellence, quality assurance, and alignment with Revamp standards. This role acts as a discipline lead on projects, supports client technical interactions, mentors junior engineers, and drives continuous improvement in design standards, tools, and processes.
This position requires strong independent judgment, technical depth in high-voltage protection systems, and the ability to coordinate cross-functional teams to deliver integrated engineering solutions.
Duties & Responsibilities
Project Delivery & Execution
Lead the protection and controls engineering scope for complex renewable energy and substation projects.
Independently develop and review complex electrical engineering plans, details, and calculations.
Oversee preparation and quality review of electrical design drawings, including one-line and three-line diagrams, panel elevations, AC/DC schematics, AC/DC cable schedules, wiring diagrams, and related documentation.
Lead power system modeling and relay coordination studies using ASPEN, ETAP, SKM, or equivalent tools, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
Develop and review protection and control design basis documentation, perform advanced relay setting calculations, and generate configuration files using SEL AcSELerator, GE EnerVista, or equivalent vendor tools.
Oversee development of SCADA system configurations and communication interface settings for substation equipment, including IEC 61850-based systems.
Serve as technical authority during field activities, commissioning, energization, and troubleshooting.
Develop and improve protection scheme templates, standards, and workflows to increase efficiency and technical consistency across portfolios.
Provide technical guidance on unconventional or complex engineering challenges and adapt standard approaches where necessary.
Client & Stakeholder Coordination
Represent the protection and controls discipline in project meetings with clients, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
Support technical client interactions across multiple projects and portfolios.
Coordinate with civil, structural, and power systems engineers to ensure integrated design delivery.
Collaborate with Project Managers to manage risks, address scope changes, and resolve technical issues proactively.
Demonstrate advanced written and verbal communication skills in technical documentation and presentations.
Collaboration & Team Support
Assign tasks to and direct discipline team members to complete assignments.
Provide mentorship and technical development to other staff members.
Review work for technical accuracy and professional soundness.

Additional Responsibilities

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Required
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
8+ years of relevant experience in power delivery, transmission, or substation engineering, with significant experience in protection and controls design.
Demonstrated experience leading protection and controls scopes on complex substation or renewable energy projects.
Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, including layers, attributes, dynamic blocks, and drawing standards oversight.
Advanced proficiency with engineering and modeling software tools such as ETAP, ASPEN OneLiner, SKM Power*Tools, SEL AcSELerator, GE EnerVista, and related relay and SCADA configuration platforms.
Strong working knowledge of IEC 61850 communication protocols and substation automation systems.
Deep understanding of high-voltage protection principles, relay coordination, and system modeling methodologies.
Demonstrated ability to independently interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate engineering assignments.
Experience preparing scopes, budgets, and schedules for discipline-specific work.
Strong problem-solving capabilities with sound engineering judgment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including client-facing technical presentations.
Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
