Sierra Club

Founded in 1892, we are a grassroots environmental organization. We promote clean energy, safeguard community health, protect wildlife, and preserve wild places through activism, public education, lobbying, and legal action. We focus on stopping oil and gas expansion, transitioning to a clean-energy economy, protecting lands, waters, and wildlife, and advocating for equitable access to clean air, fresh water, a safe climate, and nature for all.

We have staff nationwide and a network of local chapters, like the Angeles Chapter (covering Los Angeles and San Diego counties) and the San Fernando Valley Group. Our Outings program offers outdoor adventures, and Sierra magazine is our national print and digital publication covering green living, outdoor adventure, and environmental issues. Local chapters work on regional conservation, including efforts with the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Steering Committee, opposing certain developments, and addressing oil drilling and gas storage.

We believe in togetherness and are committed to fighting for a healthy climate. Our mission is to build a future where everyone benefits from a healthy planet and a direct connection to nature, grounded in environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice. We see the deep connections between the planet, humanity, and democracy, and work towards a bold, transformative agenda.

Sierra Club has over 800 staff members nationwide, plus a network of local chapters that support grassroots engagement. It is a unionized employer; two labor unions, the Progressive Workers Union and Sierra Employee Alliance, represent over half of its employees. Staff members are dedicated to exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet, contributing to a meaningful work environment.

Staff work from its Oakland, CA headquarters, nationwide field, chapter, or legislative offices, and a legislative office in Washington, DC. Some roles offer remote work. Sierra Club hires individuals who share its values and reflect the diverse communities where they live and work. It particularly values applicants identifying as Black, Indigenous, and other minoritized groups; women; and queer, transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender fluid people. The culture emphasizes community engagement, collaboration, and anti-oppression principles.
