Job Description
As a Business Intelligence Specialist you will play a key role in how SMG uses data to steer Finance and HR. In the Finance & HR Systems team, you focus on making data easily accessible and usable for our stakeholders.
Your main responsibility is to design and maintain solid data models and datasets in Power BI that Finance and HR can rely on in their day-to-day work – for recurring reporting, ad-hoc analyses, and decision-making. You will work closely with stakeholders to understand their processes and information needs, translate them into sustainable data structures, and ensure that data is consistent, well-documented and performant.
While the primary focus is on modeling in Power BI, you will also collaborate actively with colleagues working on Snowflake, Workato and GCP and influence how data is prepared and integrated in the backend.
Key Responsibilities:
Own and further develop our Power BI landscape for Finance & HR, from data model to report UX and distribution, together with your colleagues from Finance & HR Systems
Translate business requirements into BI solutions: work closely with Finance and HR stakeholders to understand their needs, challenge requirements, and design robust dashboards and KPIs.
Design and maintain semantic data models in Power BI, ensuring clean modelling, efficient DAX measures and good performance.
Ensure data quality and consistency in cooperation with the team managing our data hubs in Snowflake.
Collaborate with colleagues working on data pipelines and integrations (Snowflake, Workato, GCP) and actively influence how data is prepared for BI consumption.
Contribute to the further development of our BI & data architecture, bringing in your experience and ideas for improvement (governance, documentation, standards, naming conventions, etc.).
Support and train business users in Finance & HR in working with reports and using self-service capabilities where appropriate.
Participate in and sometimes drive projects in the areas of reporting, planning, and corporate performance management on behalf of the Finance & HR Systems team.
Qualifications
Several years of hands-on experience (approx. 3+ years) in Business Intelligence / Data Analytics, ideally with a focus on Finance / FP&A
Very strong Power BI skills:
Solid experience in data modelling
Confident in DAX and Power Query (M)
Experience with managing workspaces, datasets, row-level security, deployment pipelines
Good SQL skills for querying and validating data (Snowflake or similar cloud data warehouse).
Hands-on experience with cloud-based data platforms (Snowflake, BigQuery etc.); Snowflake experience is a strong plus.
Experience with or exposure to data integration / orchestration tools (e.g. Workato, etc.); curiosity and willingness to engage with these topics.
Strong analytical thinking, a structured way of working and attention to detail
Genuine interest in Finance and HR topics: you want to understand the business logic behind numbers
Strong communication skills: you can explain technical concepts in simple terms and act as a sparring partner for Finance and HR stakeholders
Ability to work independently, take ownership and proactively drive improvements while collaborating closely with colleagues in Finance & HR Systems.
