Job description

At MCG, we lead the healthcare community to deliver patient-focused care. We have a mission-driven team of talented physicians and technical experts developing our evidence-based content and innovating our products to accelerate improvements in healthcare. If you are driven to enhance the US healthcare system, MCG is eager to have you join our team. We cultivate a work environment that nurtures personal and professional growth, and this is a thrilling time to become a part of our organization. With dynamic roles that offer meaningful impact, you’ll be able to fully realize your potential. Plus, you’ll enjoy world-class benefits and the security, stability, and resources of our parent company, Hearst, with over 100 years of experience.

The Vice President of AI Platformsis responsible for the end-to-end delivery, operation, and continuous improvement of MCG’s commercial AI services, Synapse. This platform supports both MCG’s internal product suite and external independent software vendors (ISVs) who rely on Synapse for clinical reasoning capabilities.

This role combines commercial-grade operational leadership with platform modernization. The VP AI Platforms owns the platform strategy and operating model that supports running Synapse as a commercial-grade service, that increases adoption, reduces delivery friction, ensures reliability and scalability, drives cost-to-serve efficiency, and enables high-quality production support.

This executive excels at organizing teams, managing delivery processes, and operating AI systems as a service. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, this leader ensures that the Synapse platform meets commercial expectations for performance and availability while maintaining strong alignment with product, business, and customer outcomes.

You Will:

  • Own the full lifecycle of MCG’s Synapse platform—from planning through design, implementation, deployment, and sustained operation.

  • Lead Data Science, Data Engineering, and MLOps teams in executing predictable delivery of production-grade AI services that support both internal and partner products.

  • Define and drive a multi-year platform roadmap and target architecture that enables self-service onboarding, reusable components, and scalable delivery patternsleveraging predictive, generative, and agentic AI as appropriate.

  • Develop detailed execution plans with clear milestones, capacity allocation, and delivery tracking aligned to MCG’s business priorities.

  • Build and optimize processes for monitoring, incident management, and continuous uptime improvement, ensuring 247 reliability of the Synapse platform.

  • Establish and operate a modern LLMOps stack: prompt and configuration management, model routing, caching, A/B testing, evaluation harnesses, red-teaming, and continuous quality monitoring for Gen AI outputs (accuracy, hallucination rate, safety, and drift).

  • Deliver core Gen AI platform capabilities including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), embeddings and semantic search, vector database operations, knowledge ingestion pipelines, and grounded response generation.

  • Enable agentic workflows for complex tasks by implementing secure tool/function calling, permissioned action execution, workflow orchestration, memory/state management, and robust guardrails for clinical and operational safety.

  • Oversee model versioning, validation, and controlled releases to maintain model quality, reproducibility, and compliance.

  • Ensure strong production support and tier 4 response capabilities for live AI services used by internal and partner customers.

  • Collaborate with Product Management, Commercial, and Engineering leaders to define and deliver roadmap objectives and partner integrations.

  • Establish a metrics-driven culture with rigorous reporting on throughput, cycle time, model accuracy, and service reliability.

  • Develop and mentor a high-performing technical organization, emphasizing execution discipline, system ownership, and operational excellence.

  • Coordinate workforce planning, budget management, and vendor partnerships to optimize delivery velocity and scalability.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or equivalent experience.

  • 10 years of progressively responsible experience leading software, AI, and/or data science teams.

  • 5 years experience designing and delivering predictive and generative AI systems.

  • Experience operating production services, including customer-facing APIs and model-as-a-service platforms.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish repeatable delivery processes and manage complex cross-functional dependencies; proven track record driving organizational change.

  • Demonstrated experience organizing, developing, and recruiting data scientists, engineers, and MLOps staff.

  • Strong financial and operational acumen in managing budgets, headcount, and vendor contracts, and cloud cost controls.

  • Ability to translate business priorities into operational execution and align technical teams around measurable outcomes.

  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and organizational leadership skills.

  • Healthcare experience is welcome but not necessary; this leader will partner with executives who provide clinical and product expertise.
