Role: Counsel

Location: This role will be remote in the continental United States, Alaska, or Hawaii (must work within EST-PST time zones)

Salary Range: $130k-150K

Summary:

The Counsel of The Trevor Project is a generalist, who will take a lead role on many day-to-day matters as well as handle various high-level projects. The Counsel will report to the Assistant General Counsel, who covers legal needs relating to contracts, data privacy, technology, TrevorSpace, advocacy, fundraising, marketing, third-party requests for information, general compliance, and organization-wide risk management. The Counsel will lead and/or assist with a number of these areas and potentially others, depending upon experience, skills, interest, and organizational need. The Counsel will also work directly with the General Counsel and leaders and staff on other teams as needed, all in support of The Trevor Project’s mission of saving young LGBTQ+ lives. The Counsel will take on significant responsibilities and have an impact on risk management and legal processes across the organization.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manage day to day contracting for the legal team, including collaborating  on developing policies, processes, and training, as well as reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a wide range of contracts commensurate with skills and experience, including:

- development agreements, such as corporate partnership agreements, sponsorship agreements, charitable sales agreements, grant agreements, government contracts, and event agreements

- commercial and technology-related agreements, such as software agreements

- various other types of agreements, such as licensing agreements, personal services agreements, and contracts relating to marketing

  • Lead or collaborate on legal matters in critical areas depending on skills and experience, including data privacy, technology, TrevorSpace, product counseling, fundraising, and general nonprofit compliance and risk management, corporate governance, crisis services, labor and employment, and international law - the Counsel should be comfortable with frequently shifting priorities and demonstrate willingness to work on various types of matters as needed by the organization
  • Research and advise on new and evolving laws relevant to The Trevor Project and the LGBTQ+ community, and liaise with the Advocacy team and other teams with respect to compliance and organizational strategy; manage third-party requests for information and government investigations
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Assistant General Counsel and other members of the legal team on various high-level matters, such as material legal considerations relating to compliance and risk management
  • Regularly handle novel issues across a wide variety of areas of the law
  • Work directly with department heads and other staff on legal requests and assignments
  • Demonstrate comfort with shifting priorities and strategies
  • Handle certain matters internally, and others in coordination with The Trevor Project’s law firm partners
  • Help to build and maintain relationships with Trevor’s law firm partners
  • Exercise good judgment, effectively work independently while escalating issues as needed to your supervisor, and navigate sensitive matters with appropriate discretion
  • Demonstrate fair, ethical, and equitable business practices
  • Learn eagerly, share knowledge appropriately, and improve continuously
  • Demonstrate successful project planning and problem-solving skills, including multitasking and working well within tight timelines

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Membership of at least one state bar in good standing, and authority to practice in your applicable location
  • At least 5+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, with significant experience in general advising and contract drafting and negotiation; 2+ years as in-house counsel
  • Proven ability to work, communicate, and collaborate effectively with legal professionals as well as non-legal staff of varying seniority levels
  • Demonstrated successful project planning and problem-solving skills, with proven ability to multitask and ability to work well within tight timelines
  • Ability to think strategically, taking into account legal issues in addition to business considerations
  • Demonstrated skills in working through legal aspects of novel issues and situations
  • Ability to navigate highly confidential and sensitive matters with discretion and regard for cultural considerations
  • Attention to detail, thoroughness, and accuracy in all work
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • 7-10+ years’ legal experience
  • Experience as in-house counsel at a nonprofit or other progressive workplace
  • Experience with navigating legal issues relevant to LGBTQ+ organizations and/or the LGBTQ+ community
  • Experience in several other legal areas (e.g., compliance, data privacy, product counseling, fundraising and charitable sales marketing, general risk management, government investigations, litigation, etc.)
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Spanish

$130,000 - $150,000 a year
